The Fort Worth police officer arrested Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon says the driver he shot multiple times was preparing to run him over and he was afraid for his safety.

A Fort Worth police officer who was at the center of a controversial 2016 arrest has been arrested and booked into the Tarrant County Jail following his involvement in an off-duty shooting earlier this month according to a police department news release.

The officer, who has been with the Fort Worth PD for 19 years, was off duty on Sept. 3 when he shot a man who he claimed was trying to ram him with his vehicle after a hit-and-run.
